Waste Management & Environmental Science

In both the waste management and environmental science industries, hazardous materials and toxic substances are common. These materials need to be handled properly to prevent environmental damage and health risks. It’s critical that the containers used to collect, transport, and store them are compatible with their contents and suitably durable to prevent leaks and spills.

At McManus Drum Company, we provide a variety of steel, plastic, and fiber drums used to manage and contain waste materials. Learn how drums are used for these applications, the types of drums we offer, and what sets McManus Drum apart.

The Top Containment and Storage Needs in the Waste Management and Environmental Science Industries

Primary concerns in these industries is keeping hazardous or dangerous materials under control until they are permanently disposed of, or in their long-term storage locations. Containers used with these materials serve many purposes, such as:

  • Waste containment for liquid, powder, sludge, and other materials that flow.
  • Storing hazardous materials from clean up and remediation sites.
  • Providing a non-reactive container for corrosive or other damaging materials.
  • Serving as temporary secure storage for materials.
  • Keeping contents organized and sealed during transportation.

Our Drums and Accessories for Waste and Hazardous Material Containment

Depending on the application, materials, and timeframe for containment, drums and containers made of steel, plastic, or fiber can be used for managing waste. Drum containers are widely used for these applications because they hold a large enough volume to be efficient, yet are still easily managed with dollys, cradles, and racks. Standard 55 gal. drums are also a uniform shape, so they can be arranged neatly in most storage spaces. They also include ample space for applying labels, barcodes, and other critical identification information.

Drum products include:

  • Steel drums: Our 55 gal. steel drums are UN-rated for use with hazardous materials. Open-headed drums with NPS bungs are ideal for liquids, while closed-head drums have locking lids and are best for solids or semi solids. Chemical-resistant epoxy phenolic linings are also available.
  • Plastic drums: We carry UN-rated, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) drums in sizes from 5 to 95 gal. Open- and closed-head versions are available.
  • Fiber drums: These fiberboard drums are available in 10 to 77 gal. volumes and include steel chimes on the top and bottom for reinforcement. These durable drums are lightweight, durable, and well-suited to dry solids.
  • Drum handling equipment and tools: We carry a range of tools for sealing and unsealing, lifting, moving, and storing drums, including but not limited to dollies, covers, and bung wrenches.
  • IBCs: Intermediate bulk containers can be made from rigid or flexible plastic, stainless steel, or carbon steel. They are available in 275 and 350 gal. capacity options, and feature a cube-like shape. Many models include an outer steel cage and built-in pallet . They are suitable for storing liquids, including some chemicals or hazardous substances.

We also offer drum and IBC reconditioning and recycling services, and our drum selection includes both new and reconditioned options.
